REVIEW:Bedlam were formed in 1972 and consisted of Frank Aiello (vocals), Dave Ball (guitars), Dennis Ball (bass) and of course Cozy Powell (drums) The first album in this triple box set is 'Bedlam' and was originally released on Chrysalis Records in 1973.
This is a no-nonsense ballsy 70's rock/blues rock album in the Deep Purple (mkII), Baker-Gurvitz Army, Nazareth, Stray mould, if you like any of the mentioned bands you should have no problem with this album.
The opener 'Believe In You' is a cracking hard driving rocker and could have graced any Mk II Deep Purple album. The next track (2) 'Hot Lips' is a funky rocker, think the guitar from "Shaft' inserted into a rock song with a rock singer instead of a girly chorus. Next up is 'Sarah' (3)(not the Thin Lizzy one) a soulful rock song, then it's 'Sweet Sister Mary' (4) a similar mid-pace rock song with a funky backing.
A typical Cozy intro into track 5 'Seven Long Years' a song of betrayal and love lost. Track 6 'The Beast - well what do you think it sounds like? A rocking opening with a blues rock mid section when Aiello joins in with his blues wail. "Whisky & Wine' (7) a blues rock song about drinking just how you think it should sound. 'Looking through love eyes' a soft rock song about looking thro' love eyes I suppose nicely played tuneful song but not my favourite. 'Putting on the Flesh' and 'Set me Free' a pair of rockers to finish off this fine album.
CD 2 of this collection is a set of studio tracks that feature Cozy & the Ball brothers occasionally joined by vocalists. The studio tracks include a number of covers, including Tchaikovsky's "1812 Overture," Cream's "Swalbr," the Yardbirds' "For Your Love," and Freddie King's "Hideaway."
CD 3 is a live set from 1973 (original Bedlam line-up) that first saw light of day in 2003 (to my knowledge), this set includes a few titles from the debut LP and a 21-minute hard-rock jam based around Sanford Clark's "The Fool." and is Spinal Tap-esque in its long guitar solos.
